The love of truth, of God's word has all but evaporated in this generation. How we long to see reformation, alas, this we discern is a time of chastisement not revival and refreshing. It is a day when as individual Christians here and there we perhaps can be enabled to strengthen and comfort one another. There is always a faithful remnant, may it please God we be counted amongst that number. With the fascination with Pentecostalism, ritualism, faith healing and resurgent Roman Catholicism, and that amongst conservative congregations, we can only shake our heads in disbelief. However, as we seek to propagate the truth, we hope and pray that God will again smile and grant to us a better day.

There is more than a notion around, stemming, mainly from liberalism and the loathsome superficiality of the ethos of mainline evangelicalism today, the pelagianism, armininiasm that is taught, that which belongs also to the dogma of evolutionism, that in every creature there is a seed of good just waiting to sprout forth, to be developed into perfection. Men are infatuated with their own ignorance. This neither the clear teaching of Scripture or our Reformed confessions of faith. What saith the scripture concerning man's state in sin. Listen up!!

There are many innovations being brought into the visible church in these days, many are contemporary novelties, some even popish and pagan ceremonies that have lingered, untreated for many years, but they are allowed to continue simply because men see nothing unlawful in them. They would in fact protest that they are lawful, and then of course there is the peace of the church. And so the innovations and ceremonies multiply while men rest easy, they say they have a good conscience. But so they? What and from whence does a truly good conscience come from? Listen up!!!

The supposed bones of Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897) a Roman Catholic saint, who died at the age of 24, were paraded around different venues in England this year (2009). One of those venues was York Minster, the only non-Roman Catholic venue. We were outside the Anglican Cathedral, supposedly a Protestant denomination, to protest against this grossly idolatrous affair, and of course, some people ask why. Well here is why, because it is contrary to the Anglican Church's own statement of faith, the thirty nine articles (Article 22), and, much more importantly, as their own article states, it is repugnant to the word of God. God cannot and does not wink at sin, not even for a moment. He punishes all unrighteousness in time as well as in eternity. The wrath of God is revealed in this world evidently, in different ways, a present death, the corruption of the body, all the sufferings and misery of men. All men lie in the midst of death. Death reigns over all men ( Romans 5:12-14). Yes, even in the prosperity that many enjoy in this world, even there is the evidence of God's wrath, his holy displeasure against sin. Listen up!!! |

There is but one criterion and source of the truth, the word of God in Holy Scripture. To take man's reason, his intellect or even mysticism as the yardstick for truth, is in reality the same thing, for both deny, lay aside the objective truth that God himself has revealed in his word, the Bible. So for the Christian, it is neither unreasonable, nor illogical to stand upon and present the truth as reasonable. In fact that is the demand that God makes of man himself, "come now, saith the Lord, and let us reason together" ( Isaiah 1:18). Listen up!!! |

At least John Wesley was honest, that cannot be said of his spiritual off-spring. John only claimed seek the so-called second blessing, but never claimed to have attained it. The problems in Methodism arose when his followers began to claim the attainment of this blessing, Methodism was thus plagued and embarrassed with fanaticism. So we see this fore-runner to the Pentecostal/Charismatic second blessing advocacy, is only a resurgence of Wesley's 'second blessing' theology. There is nothing new under the sun, Scripture says so. The content of what is offered to God in terms of praise in our generation, is not, cannot be pleasing to God. It is, for a greater part, unscriptural, much of it is done too what is akin to a Western rock and roll idiom. Then there is the singing of uninspired praise. God has given to us his own hymn book, in the book of Psalms, where we have everything necessary, that is godly, holy and completely acceptable to God, his own inspired matter for praise. What does it mean to sanctify the Lord's or Sabbath Day? Our Reformed Directory gives us clear instruction. It is the whole, the entire day not just a part of it. The modern custom, for that is what it has become, to attend one single service of worship on the Sabbath Day and then to engage in all sorts of worldly activities is an abomination, it is sinful to say the least. We are delight in God, in the things of God, outwardly and inwardly, it is a spiritual worship to offered with grace in the heart. "Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy" ( Exodus 20:8). It is no small thing to read the word of God in public. However as in many aspects of God's worship in today's modern church, it matters not who does it, or how it's done. But that is certainly not the attitude of Scripture itself or of our Reformed, Directory of Public Worship. The Scripture is to be read with authority, the pulpit is a place of authority, the apostle Paul tells us he suffers not a woman to have authority in the church. So who reads it? A church officer, with the ability to read the Scriptures with gravity, solemnity and with clarity. And it is to listened to, as it were, and as it is, the very mouth of God speaking to you. We live in days when anything goes in terms of worship. The behaviour of people in God's house in some quarters is nothing short of atrocious, in others its laid-back, informality is the goal. The apostle Paul more than suggests that there is a way in which to conduct ourselves in the house God ( 1Timothy 3:15)). Where is the fear of God, the holy respect due to our Creator and Redeemer? The Directory of Public Worship is one of the most beautiful documents ever published in England, penned in a day when true godly piety, uniformity of worship was sought and prized, when people were told how to behave properly in the house of God.
